Doug Vogel wrote in December 2000 on the chess variant, where one plays with the same pieces but on
a board with a bigger size.
While the idea might not be new, I cannot recall having seen it.
Rules
Chess is played on a 12 by 12 board, with the usual setup of chess pieces in the middle 8 by 8 part,
i.e., the 8x8 grid is positioned
centered within the 12x12 grid. All rules stay the same as in usual
chess. Pawns much reach the 10th
row to promote, i.e., the last row of the 8 by 8 board. (Variant: pawns must reach the 12th
row to promote.)
Comment
Doug Vogel writes: In playing this variation with friends, the added space of course opens up the
game, but it also means most of the
standard openings are no longer valid. See also Ralph Betza's Chess on a Really Big Board.
